Indonesia’s Megawati Cites Ghana as Example of Rejecting Vote-Buying Tactics
JAKARTA, RAKYAT NEWS – Indonesia’s biggest opposition party, Indonesian Democratic Party of the Battle (PDI-P) Chairwoman Megawati “Brave Lady” Soekarnoputri has expressed deep concern about the rising number of reports regarding intimidation tactics related to the upcoming 2024 regional elections (Pilkada).
According to Megawati, many of these incidents involve state institutions pressuring voters and candidates, leading to a serious threat to the integrity of the electoral process.
She also highlighted several complaints about the lack of neutrality among election organizers.
In her address, Megawati specifically mentioned that certain political candidates were being pushed onto the electorate through coercion. In some cases, these tactics involved the offering of free basic goods and, in more extreme instances, even cash incentives.
“They are forcing certain candidate pairs on the people, using intimidation tactics and promises of free groceries, or even money,” Megawati said during a video message shown at PDI-P’s headquarters in Menteng, Jakarta, on Wednesday, November 20.
The PDI-P leader stressed that Indonesians have always valued their honor, dignity, and self-respect. She called on the public to ensure the 2024 Pilkada remains honest, fair, and democratic.
She emphasized that such values are critical for preserving the integrity of the electoral system and ensuring that democracy thrives in the country.
Megawati also drew attention to how external countries have handled similar situations, citing the example of Ghana.
She praised the citizens of Ghana for their maturity in democracy, particularly for their rejection of vote-buying tactics.
“In Africa, far from here, the people of Ghana have shown the courage to refuse the lure of power,” she remarked. She pointed out that Ghanaians prioritized demands for better education and job opportunities over the temptation of receiving free handouts.
The daughter of former president’s and one of Indonesian founding father Ahmad Sukarno commended the Ghanaian public for its ability to resist political manipulation and rejected promises of material incentives.
According to Megawati, the Ghanaian people demonstrated a strong commitment to democracy by standing firm against any attempts to undermine their votes.
Drawing on this example, Megawati urged Indonesian voters to make informed decisions and choose their leaders wisely. She warned that the impact of these choices would last for the next five years, making it all the more crucial for voters to ensure they are selecting the best candidates for the job.
“We must be careful, as the consequences of our choices will affect the country for the long term,” she stated.
As the Pilkada approaches, Megawati reminded the public of the importance of monitoring the election process closely. “Let’s ensure that the elections are free from any form of manipulation. We need to be present at the polling stations as witnesses, keeping an eye on the vote counting and safeguarding the integrity of the ballots,” she emphasized.
She also called for active participation from all citizens to prevent any form of electoral fraud. Megawati stressed that a fair and transparent election is essential for the continued health of Indonesia’s democracy and for ensuring that the right leaders are elected to govern.
The General Election Commission (KPU) has confirmed that the 2024 Pilkada will take place on November 27, with elections being held simultaneously across 37 provinces and 508 districts and cities. The event is set to be a major milestone in Indonesia’s democratic process, and all eyes are now on the steps taken to ensure a fair and peaceful election. (Uki Ruknuddin)
