Indonesia Evacuates Over 50 Citizens from Middle East Amid Rising Tensions
JAKARTA, RAKYAT NEWS – The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) confirmed that over 50 Indonesian citizens (WNI) evacuated from several Middle Eastern countries arrived home on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. This follows the return of 11 WNI from Iran the previous day, who landed at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten.
According to Judha Nugraha, Director of Protection at Kemlu, 48 WNI and one foreign national (WNA) married to an Indonesian were evacuated from Iran. The group arrived via three commercial flights from Baku, Azerbaijan, with layovers in Istanbul and Doha before proceeding to Jakarta.
In addition to the evacuees from Iran, three WNI from northern Yemen—a region controlled by Houthi rebels—were successfully evacuated by Kemlu in coordination with the Indonesian Embassy in Muscat. Two other WNI, residents of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, were evacuated with assistance from the Indonesian Embassy in Amman, Jordan.
Judha noted that the embassies in Muscat and Amman had raised their security status to the highest level, Siaga 1 (Alert 1), due to escalating tensions. Similarly, Iran’s security status was elevated to Siaga 1 on June 18, 2025, as announced by Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono.
The evacuation efforts involved 97 individuals from Iran, comprising 96 WNI (including three embassy staff) and one Iranian married to an Indonesian. They were transported to Baku for onward flights to Indonesia.
The repatriation highlights Indonesia’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens amid regional conflicts. Earlier, on June 24, a first group of 11 WNI from Iran had already returned, marking the initial phase of the evacuation process.
