Modern Slavery Scandal: Amnesty Exposes Indonesian Workers Trapped in Cambodian Hell Camps
JAKARTA, RAKYAT NEWS – Amnesty International Indonesia has called on the Indonesian government to take immediate action to protect its citizens trapped in modern slavery and forced labor in Cambodia. The demand follows a shocking new report exposing human trafficking operations in dozens of Cambodian online scam compounds.
The report titled *”I Was Someone Else’s Property”* documents 18 months of research revealing systematic human trafficking, torture and forced labor affecting thousands, including Indonesian migrant workers. It implicates Chinese criminal networks and Cambodian authorities’ complicity.
One Indonesian victim, Daniel, described being trafficked to a scam compound in Koh Kong where he was imprisoned, forced to work, and later sold to another facility. After escaping, he was detained by Cambodian immigration for lacking proper documents.
Usman Hamid, Executive Director of Amnesty Indonesia, stressed that Indonesia has a constitutional obligation to protect its citizens abroad. He urged authorities to use all diplomatic channels to pressure Cambodia for proper investigations and prosecutions.
Amnesty demanded the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh be properly resourced to provide urgent protection and legal assistance to victims. Many trapped workers reportedly receive inadequate support from diplomatic officials.
The report found most scam compounds continue operating despite police raids, suggesting collusion between criminals and officials. Victims often face re-trafficking after brief detentions, while perpetrators remain free.
Amnesty recommended Indonesia lead ASEAN efforts to combat transnational human trafficking networks. Regional cooperation is deemed essential to dismantle these criminal operations spanning Southeast Asia.
Montse Ferrer, Amnesty’s Research Director, accused Cambodian authorities of willful negligence, stating they “could stop these violations but choose not to.” The inaction enables ongoing abuses against foreign workers.
