Daniel Tangkilisan’s acquittal, according to Ade, should serve as a warning to end the criminalization of environmental activists. In a time of climate crisis, environmental activists’ voices should be seen as efforts to combat extinction.
“This should also be a lesson for other law enforcement agencies like the Indonesian National Police and the Attorney General’s Office to be cautious in applying the law to avoid criminalizing activists. Although this decision brings new hope, the enactment of Law No. 1 of 2024 remains a nightmare for freedom of expression in this country,” he closed (Ruknuddin)
