US Selects Indonesia for Early Tariff Negotiations, Signaling Stronger Economic Ties
Washington, DC (RAKYAT NEWS) – Indonesia has been selected as one of the initial countries to begin reciprocal tariff negotiations with the United States, following an announcement by former President Donald Trump. This development was confirmed by Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, during a press conference held in Washington, DC, on Friday.
Indonesia joins a select group of nations, including Vietnam, Japan, and Italy, that have already entered discussions with the US to adjust tariffs. Hartarto noted that Indonesia’s early inclusion highlights the country’s proactive approach in pursuing beneficial trade terms and enhancing its global economic position.
During the visit, the Indonesian delegation engaged in high-level discussions with top US officials, including Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick. These diplomatic efforts have led both parties to agree on a 60-day timeline to finalize negotiations, signaling a shared commitment to resolving trade imbalances swiftly.
Hartarto stated that the US has responded positively to Indonesia’s proposals. Technical-level talks are now underway, with both countries aiming to reach a comprehensive and mutually advantageous agreement. Indonesia’s economic potential and strategic role in the region were key factors in its early selection.
As part of the discussions, Indonesia has proposed expanding energy imports from the US, particularly liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), crude oil, and gasoline. The country is also looking to increase agricultural imports such as wheat, soybeans, and soybean milk, alongside capital goods essential for industrial growth.
To support US businesses operating in Indonesia, Hartarto pledged to simplify licensing processes and offer a range of incentives. He also proposed enhanced cooperation in critical minerals and improvements in import procedures, especially for US horticultural products.
