JAKARTA, RAKYAT NEWS – The Indonesian giant PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE) has made its largest oil and gas discovery in the past 15 years, with an estimated 652 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMBOE) found in 2024. This represents a 34% increase compared to the previous year. The discovery was supported by the drilling of 22 exploration wells, a 769-kilometer two-dimensional seismic survey, and a 4,990-square-kilometer three-dimensional seismic survey. These findings mark a significant milestone for Indonesia’s energy sector.

The discovery includes two major reservoirs: Tedong-001 in Central Sulawesi and Padang Pancuran-1 in South Sumatra. The Tedong-001 well is estimated to contain 548 billion cubic feet of gas and 13.51 million barrels of condensate. Meanwhile, the Padang Pancuran-1 well holds recoverable resources of 140.6 MMBOE. While the Padang Pancuran-1 discovery is smaller than Tedong-001, there are still three appraisal wells to be drilled in the area.

Muharram Jaya Panguriseng, PHE’s Exploration Director, stated that the findings would significantly contribute to national oil and gas production and help Indonesia achieve energy self-sufficiency and energy security. The company is committed to enhancing Indonesia’s energy resilience by continuing to explore and develop new resources.

PHE’s achievements were supported by extensive seismic surveys and the successful drilling of 22 exploration wells. These efforts are part of the company’s strategy to secure long-term energy production for Indonesia. The company has also made substantial progress in seismic exploration, conducting a 769-kilometer two-dimensional survey and a 4,990-square-kilometer three-dimensional survey, further supporting its ongoing exploration activities.

In addition to Tedong-001 and Padang Pancuran-1, PHE has discovered a new gas potential at the Tedong (TDG)-001 well in the Mamosalato subdistrict of North Morowali Regency. This well, drilled vertically to a depth of 2,448 meters, confirmed a hydrocarbon column of 163 meters thick, with a gas output of 15 million cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) and 185 barrels of condensate per day (BCPD).

Fadjar Djoko Santoso, the Vice President of Corporate Communications at Pertamina, emphasized the company’s continued efforts to increase production in the upstream sector and discover new reserves to support Indonesia’s energy independence. He also mentioned that Pertamina is focusing on both traditional fossil fuel resources and sustainable renewable energy businesses.

The new gas reserves in South Sumatra contribute to Pertamina’s total recoverable resources of 143 MMBOE and 1.7 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gas for 2024. These discoveries are expected to play a key role in Indonesia’s energy future and further solidify Pertamina’s leadership in the global energy sector.
