KL, RAKYAT NEWS – Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia expressed his intentions to enhance the cooperation between Malaysia and Indonesia in various sectors, including economy, energy, defense, and education. He made this announcement during a joint press conference with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the iconic Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur on January 27, 2025.

Anwar emphasized the importance of utilizing Indonesia’s potential to meet Malaysia’s needs, rather than relying on other nations. He pointed out that Indonesia, being a close neighbor with a shared history and culture, offers significant opportunities for bilateral collaboration that could benefit both nations.

“Indonesia should be prioritized in our economic strategies. We need to explore opportunities that will benefit both our nations, rather than looking elsewhere,” Anwar said. This remark reflects Malaysia’s desire to tap into the vast resources, skills, and industries of its neighbor.

Among the key areas for collaboration, Anwar highlighted sectors like trade, investment, workforce development, and technological innovation. He underscored that the relationship between the two countries should go beyond merely transactional exchanges and focus on mutual growth and prosperity.

Further, the Malaysian leader also underscored the significance of defense cooperation between the two countries, which has long been a stable aspect of the bilateral relationship. Malaysia and Indonesia share similar security concerns in the region, including maritime security, counterterrorism efforts, and regional stability.

“Strengthening our defense ties will also contribute to our shared goal of regional peace and security. Both nations are crucial to ensuring stability in Southeast Asia,” Anwar remarked. He stressed that both nations must work together to address the evolving challenges in the region, such as transnational crime and territorial disputes.
