264 Rohingya Migrants Relocated to Temporary Shelter in Aceh Timur Indonesia
Their arrival in Aceh Timur was first discovered by a local fisherman, M. Tayeub Abu Bakar, who was fishing on the night of January 5. He noticed two motorized boats tethered about 200 meters offshore and reported the sighting to the Peureulak Barat Police.
According to Aceh Timur Police Chief AKBP Nova Suryandaru, the migrants disembarked shortly after landing, and it became clear they were Rohingya refugees. “The fisherman’s report allowed us to coordinate quickly to ensure their safety and manage their relocation,” he stated.
The local government, supported by national and international organizations, is working to provide humanitarian assistance and ensure the welfare of the migrants while they remain in the temporary shelter. Further plans for their resettlement or integration remain under discussion. (Uki Ruknuddin)
