HMPV Virus Spreads in China, Indonesia Tightens Entry Regulations
JAKARTA, RAKYAT NEWS – The Indonesian Ministry of Health has announced that, although no cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been reported in Indonesia, it will increase monitoring at entry points into the country. The virus, currently spreading in China, can lead to respiratory infections resembling the flu, but in severe cases, it may cause pneumonia or bronchitis.
Widyawati, the Ministry’s spokesperson, confirmed that health surveillance efforts will focus on international travelers exhibiting symptoms of Influenza Like Illness (ILI). “We will continue coordinating with relevant authorities to ensure effective preventive measures are in place,” she said on January 4.
HMPV is a virus that primarily affects the respiratory system, causing symptoms such as cough, fever, and difficulty breathing. While it generally poses minimal risk to healthy adults, it can be more dangerous to children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. The virus also poses a higher risk for those with underlying conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and respiratory issues.
The Ministry of Health emphasized that there is currently no specific vaccine or treatment for HMPV. However, rest and proper hydration are typically effective in managing the symptoms. Authorities are urging the public to remain calm while preparing preventive steps.
Preventive measures include wearing masks in public spaces, frequent handwashing, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The Ministry reassured the public that, although the virus is concerning, it does not pose an immediate threat to the general population, particularly in healthy adults.
In addition, Aji Muhawarman, the Head of the Ministry’s Communication and Public Service Bureau, reported that influenza A and HMPV continue to spread in China. He noted that the Ministry is monitoring the situation closely to prevent any potential outbreaks in Indonesia.
