JAKARTA, RAKYAT NEWS – Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar has responded to the recent trend of hoisting the Jolly Roger flag from the popular Japanese anime One Piece in Indonesia. While recognizing this as a form of creative expression, Muhaimin urged the public to maintain the sanctity and harmony of Indonesia’s Independence Day celebrations.

“I respect and appreciate everyone’s creativity, but let’s preserve the harmony, dignity, and sacredness of August as the month of independence,” Muhaimin said in Jakarta on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

The minister made these remarks following the viral phenomenon where fans across the country have been raising the iconic pirate flag in various locations, often alongside or even instead of the national flag, Merah Putih. The act has sparked debate among officials, citizens, and cultural observers.

Muhaimin clarified that such acts should not be a cause for concern, as long as they are conducted respectfully. “We should also honor innovation and creativity that are not harmful. Innovation should have no boundaries. As Gus Dur once said, ‘As long as the Red and White is above, the rest can follow,’” he added, quoting the late Indonesian president known for his pluralist views.

Meanwhile, Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi echoed similar sentiments but issued a firmer warning. He stated that the use of anime-inspired flags should not taint the sacred moment of Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day, which will be commemorated on August 17, 2025.

“This is our national celebration. We hope the sacredness of this month is not diminished by symbols that are not part of our national identity,” said Prasetyo. He emphasized that while freedom of expression is important, there must be clear limits when it comes to national symbols and state ceremonies.
