JAKARTA, RAKYAT NEWS – On December 25, 2024, the Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham), announced the distribution of special Christmas remission (RK) to 15,807 inmates across the country.

This initiative aims to provide relief to well-behaved inmates and encourage their reintegration into society. In addition, 169 juvenile inmates received reduced sentences under the program, bringing the total number of individuals benefiting from the Christmas remission to 15,976.

Minister of Law and Human Rights, Agus Andrianto, explained that out of the 15,807 adult inmates, 15,691 received a partial sentence reduction (RK I), while 116 inmates were granted full remission (RK II). This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to provide incentives for inmates who demonstrate good conduct and actively participate in rehabilitation programs.

The special remission program also includes juvenile offenders. A total of 169 children in correctional facilities received sentence reductions, with 166 benefiting from a partial sentence reduction (PMP I) and three being granted full release (PMP II). These measures aim to offer juvenile offenders a chance for a fresh start while encouraging their rehabilitation.

Remissions are granted to inmates and juvenile offenders who meet specific criteria, including good behavior, adherence to rules, and active participation in rehabilitation programs. Another key consideration for granting remission is the reduction in the offender’s risk level, indicating progress in their rehabilitation.

North Sumatra emerged as the province with the highest number of remission recipients for Christmas 2024. A total of 3,196 inmates from the province benefited from the special remission. Other provinces with significant numbers of recipients included East Nusa Tenggara, with 1,894 inmates, and Papua, with 1,447 inmates receiving remission.
