Indonesia and France Discuss Joint Defense Projects, Including Rafale Jets and Submarine Development
BRAZIL, RAKYAT NEWS – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto held a bilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where they discussed expanding cooperation between the two nations in key sectors, including economic collaboration and defense technology.
The meeting, which took place at the Museu de Arte Moderna, highlighted Indonesia’s commitment to continuing its strategic partnership with France, particularly through the Indonesia-France Economic Forum. President Macron expressed his support for the continuation of this economic dialogue, emphasizing the potential for both countries to further enhance bilateral trade and investment.
Indonesia’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, who accompanied President Prabowo, shared that the two leaders also focused on advancing their economic ties. The Forum, held in Paris earlier this year, was a significant platform that facilitated the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) between Indonesian state-owned enterprises, such as Pertamina, and French companies like Genvia. These agreements are aimed at advancing sustainable energy and smart city development.
Airlangga also noted that the ongoing economic cooperation is not limited to energy and infrastructure but also covers green technology and environmental sustainability. The collaboration with Genvia, particularly in the transition to clean energy and geothermal development, underscores Indonesia’s focus on environmentally conscious growth.
In addition to economic matters, the leaders discussed defense cooperation, with a particular emphasis on military procurement. President Macron praised Indonesia’s efforts in enhancing its defense capabilities, specifically through the acquisition of French-made Rafale fighter jets and the joint development of submarines.
Indonesia has already signed agreements for the purchase of 42 Rafale fighter jets from Dassault Aviation, with the first batch expected to arrive by early 2026. The acquisition is part of a broader effort by Indonesia to modernize its military forces and strengthen its defense industry. This deal, which includes three stages of procurement, marks a significant milestone in the defense ties between Indonesia and France.
