JAKARTA, RAKYAT NEWS — Amnesty International Indonesia has condemned the excessive use of force by Indonesian police against protesters during the recent #EmergencyWarning demonstrations.

The organization’s Executive Director, Usman Hamid, described the actions of the police as a “blatant disregard” for the right to protest.

He stated, “Despite the peaceful nature of the protests, police forces across several Indonesian cities responded with unwarranted violence, ignoring the fundamental rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.”

He emphasized that this incident is part of a troubling pattern of excessive force used in policing protests, reflecting a broader failure to uphold both national and international human rights standards.

Protesters, including minors, were subjected to beatings and other forms of mistreatment that could be considered torture. Journalists covering the protests faced intimidation, threats, and violence, infringing upon their rights to physical safety and freedom of expression.

According to Amnesty International Indonesia, over 100 individuals, including 27 adults and 78 children, were arrested arbitrarily in Jakarta alone. Among those detained were a staff member of the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute and the Director of the Lokataru Foundation, both of whom were injured. Additionally, at least nine students sustained injuries from police actions, and seven journalists reported being threatened or attacked.

In Bandung, police were captured on video attacking protesters with batons and using physical force. In Semarang, tear gas deployed by police led to multiple protesters being hospitalized with respiratory issues and fainting.
