KUALA LUMPUR, RAKYAT NEWS – Malaysia’s national oil giant, Petronas, has announced the commencement of gas production from the Jerun Field in Block SK 408, located approximately 160 kilometers offshore Sarawak.

Senior Vice President of Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM) at Petronas, Bacho Pilong, stated in a press release in Kuala Lumpur on 9 July, that Sakura OMV Upstream (Sarawak) Inc. (SapuraOMV), as the operator of the block, along with its partners, has achieved a significant milestone for the country’s energy portfolio.

He highlighted that the project promises to make a substantial contribution to Malaysia’s long-term gas supply sustainability.

The Malaysian oil company, he added, is committed to ensuring optimal and sustainable oil and gas supply for the country’s energy security, while striving towards low-carbon and low-emission operations in alignment with the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

The Jerun Field was initially discovered in 2015 by SapuraOMV, following the drilling of nine exploration wells from 2014 to 2015.

Bacho mentioned that the project has the capacity to produce up to 550 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) and is poised to meet the increasing global energy demand.(Uki Ruknuddin)
