PERU, RAKYAT NEWS – An Indonesian diplomat, Zetro Leonardo Purba, was tragically killed in Lima after being shot three times by an unidentified gunman on Monday night (September 1, 2025). The incident occurred near his residence in the Lince district of the Peruvian capital.

According to local broadcaster Panamericana Television, Purba was cycling with his wife when the assailant opened fire.

His wife managed to escape unharmed and is now under the protection of local police. The sudden attack has shocked both the Indonesian diplomatic community and local residents.

Purba sustained critical gunshot wounds and was immediately taken to Javier Prado Clinic. Despite efforts from medical staff, his life could not be saved. The Indonesian Embassy in Lima has since confirmed his death and is coordinating with local authorities regarding the ongoing investigation.

At the time of his death, Purba was serving as a Junior Chancellor Officer at the Indonesian Embassy in Lima. He had only arrived in Peru five months ago for his assignment. Prior to this posting, he worked at the Indonesian Consulate General in Melbourne, Australia.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Peruvian police stated that they are still investigating whether the attack was a targeted assault or part of broader criminal activity in the area. No suspects have yet been apprehended.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its deepest condolences to Purba’s family and called on Peruvian authorities to thoroughly investigate the case. “We are working closely with local officials to ensure justice is served,” a ministry spokesperson said.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about safety and crime in Lima, a city that has witnessed rising violence in recent years. For Indonesia, the loss of a young diplomat abroad marks not only a tragedy for his family but also a painful reminder of the risks faced by those serving their nation overseas.(Uki Ruknuddin)
