Russia, Indonesia Strengthen Ties as Foreign Ministers Meet Ahead of Key Summit
RUSSIA, RAKYAT NEWS – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warmly welcomed his Indonesian counterpart, Foreign Minister Sugiono, during their official meeting in Moscow today. The discussions highlighted the deepening bilateral ties and shared strategic interests between the two nations.
Minister Lavrov expressed his honor at hosting Minister Sugiono, noting his frequent visits to Russia. Over the past year alone, the Indonesian diplomat has visited three times—first during the summer of 2024 for a leaders’ summit at the Kremlin, then in autumn for the BRICS meeting in Kazan, and most recently in winter for high-level talks with Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov.
Today’s meeting comes ahead of an upcoming summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indonesian President Joko Widodo, scheduled to take place in St. Petersburg in two days. The leaders will meet on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), reinforcing economic and diplomatic collaboration.
The ministers reflected on the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Indonesia, a milestone that underscores the enduring friendship and mutual trust between the two nations. Lavrov emphasized that this partnership has consistently demonstrated a shared vision on key global issues.
Russia deeply appreciates Indonesia’s constructive and principled approach to bilateral relations, which prioritizes national interests while fostering cooperation in trade, economic development, humanitarian efforts, and political-security matters.
Both nations also enjoy strong collaboration on the international stage, with Lavrov praising the dynamic and evolving nature of their partnership. He welcomed Indonesia’s recent accession as a full member of BRICS, a move that strengthens multilateral cooperation.
