Amnesty International Demands Release of Student Arrested Over Prabowo-Jokowi Meme
“Government institutions, including the presidency, are not entitled to protection of reputation under human rights law,” Hamid said. “Criminalizing dissent only creates a climate of fear and is a cruel method of silencing criticism.”
Amnesty also expressed concern over the psychological toll on the victims and their families. The misuse of the ITE Law has led to unjust detentions and family separations, contributing to lasting trauma and social injustice.
From 2019 to 2024, Amnesty documented at least 530 cases of criminalization under the ITE Law involving 563 individuals. The majority of these were initiated through police cyber patrols or reports by local officials. Amnesty reiterated its demand that the government stop using outdated digital laws to stifle dissent and respect the right to free expression in all forms. (Uki Ruknuddin)
