No Indonesians Harmed in Iran Blast That Killed 25; Embassy Deploys Emergency Checks
JAKARTA,RAKYAT NEWS – The Indonesian Foreign Ministry confirmed Sunday (27/4) that no Indonesian citizens were harmed in Saturday’s deadly explosion at Shahid Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas, Iran. The blast killed 25 people and injured over 1,100.
Ministry spokesperson Rolliansyah Soemirat stated that all 385 Indonesians registered in Iran are accounted for and safe. None were residing in Bandar Abbas at the time of the incident.
“Most Indonesian nationals in Iran are students living in Qom or expatriates based in Tehran,” Soemirat explained in an official statement. He noted that two Indonesian sailors previously employed there had already returned home last year.
The Indonesian Embassy in Tehran has activated emergency protocols, coordinating with Iranian authorities and local Indonesian communities. Regular safety checks are being conducted for all citizens across the country.
For urgent assistance, Indonesians can contact the embassy’s 24-hour hotline at +989024668889. The ministry emphasized its readiness to evacuate citizens if necessary.
The explosion erupted at Shahid Rajaee Port, a vital shipping hub near the Strait of Hormuz. Witnesses reported a small fire rapidly escalating into massive explosions due to extreme 40°C heat igniting chemical storage tanks.
Authorities suspect improperly stored industrial chemicals caused the disaster. The port handles critical trade for Iran, bordering Qatar and the UAE.
This marks Iran’s worst industrial accident since 2022. Investigations continue as crews work to contain residual fires and chemical hazards.
The Foreign Ministry advises Indonesians to avoid the affected area and follow embassy updates. Further details will be released as the situation develops. (Uki Ruknuddin)
