SOUTH BORNEO, RAKYAT NEWS – The Indonesian Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) revealed indications of sexual violence in the murder case of a female journalist, Juwita (25), in Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan. The institution suspects that the murder, which involved a member of the Indonesian Navy, may have been preceded by acts of sexual abuse.

Deputy Chairperson of LPSK, Antonius PS Wibowo, stated that these indications were found after their team conducted a direct examination in Banjarbaru. They visited the crime scene and spoke to the victim’s family, investigators, and military officials handling the case.

“There are strong signs of sexual violence. This will be one of the main points in our further investigation and support for the victim’s family,” Antonius said during a press conference on Tuesday, April 23, 2024.

According to LPSK, a restitution claim will be made on behalf of the victim’s family. The agency emphasized that, besides seeking justice, they aim to ensure that the victim’s family receives adequate compensation for the suffering caused.

The murder suspect, identified as a member of the Indonesian Navy stationed in Banjarmasin, has been detained by military authorities. The suspect has reportedly admitted to the killing, which has shocked both the local community and the national media industry.

LPSK expressed deep concern that a journalist could become a victim of such a brutal act. They urged the government and relevant institutions to ensure full protection for journalists, especially female journalists who often face higher risks in the field.

Antonius also noted that the case should not be treated as an isolated criminal incident. “This is about the safety of those who work to bring information to the public. We are pushing for a thorough and transparent investigation,” he said.
