Indonesia’s Digital Minister Leads AI Governance Discussions at Paris Summit
PARIS, RAKYAT NEWS – Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, represented President Prabowo Subianto at the prestigious Artificial Intelligence Action Summit (AIAS) in Paris on February 10-11, 2025.
The summit, which brings together global leaders, including heads of state, ministers, CEOs, and international organizations, serves as a key forum to discuss the advancements and governance of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
During the summit, Minister Meutya emphasized Indonesia’s growing role on the global stage and the importance of this forum in fostering global collaboration on AI’s development and regulation. “This event continues the conversations started at the AI Safety Summit in the UK in November 2023 and the AI Seoul Summit in South Korea in May 2024,” said Meutya in a statement on February 9. The summit aims to explore practical steps and international cooperation on AI issues, focusing on governance and the future of AI technologies.
The French President, Emmanuel Macron, extended an invitation to President Prabowo Subianto to participate in the high-level discussions at AIAS. As part of Indonesia’s commitment to AI’s future, Minister Meutya was also invited by UNESCO to present the country’s “readiness assessment method” at a side event on February 10, 2025. The AIAS event began on February 6, with a reception at the Elysee Palace, followed by high-level sessions at the Grand Palais. The summit’s key activities include Science Day, Cultural Weekend, and roundtable discussions, culminating with the Leaders Plenary and Closing Ceremony on February 11.
Minister Meutya’s participation in AIAS underscores Indonesia’s commitment to shaping the global discourse on AI. The event is a significant opportunity for Indonesia to build alliances and showcase its expertise in digital transformation. Indonesia’s potential to become a key player in the AI ecosystem hinges on the development of robust regulations and strategic collaborations between the government, academia, industry, and society.
AI’s global influence is expected to grow, and Indonesia is keen on ensuring that its approach aligns with global standards. As Minister Meutya pointed out, the ability to shape AI governance requires comprehensive policy discussions, and Indonesia is taking steps to foster this dialogue through initiatives like the AI Policy Dialogue. This dialogue addresses the opportunities and challenges of AI in sectors such as e-commerce, banking, healthcare, education, and sustainability.
Indonesia’s e-commerce sector, projected to reach USD 150 billion by 2030, is one of the areas where AI adoption could yield significant benefits. Minister Meutya emphasized the importance of integrating AI technologies to boost productivity and offer more value to stakeholders. With the right regulations, Indonesia can harness AI to drive innovation, create new opportunities, and enhance its competitiveness in the global market.
Moreover, the ongoing collaboration between the Indonesian government and international stakeholders at forums like AIAS positions the country as a key contributor to shaping AI’s trajectory. By participating in global AI discussions, Indonesia ensures that its policies are informed by international best practices while addressing its unique national needs. Minister Meutya’s engagement at AIAS represents a significant step towards achieving this goal.
Indonesia is poised to play a central role in the global AI ecosystem, thanks to its proactive involvement in international forums, commitment to AI regulation, and strong partnerships across sectors. The country’s strategic focus on AI will pave the way for a future where AI not only drives economic growth but also enhances societal well-being and sustainability. (Uki Ruknuddin)
