Indonesian Authorities Vow Strong Response to Papua Separatist Activities in Makassar
MAKASSAR, RAKYAT NEWS – The inauguration of the new leadership of theNational Committee for West Papua (KNPB) Makassar Consulate on February 1, 2025, has sparked significant attention, particularly due to the strong statements made by KNPB leaders regarding Papuan independence.
The event, which took place at the Papua Dormitory on Jl. Lanto Dg Pasewang, Maricaya Baru, Makassar, gathered various KNPB members, including Warpo Sampari Wetipo, Chairman of the KNPB Central Board. Wetipo’s speech called for intellectual resistance against the Indonesian government, urging the youth to actively contribute to the independence movement through education and strategic action.
During his address, Wetipo framed Indonesia’s rule over Papua as a continuation of colonialism, urging Papuans to reject any future under Indonesian governance. This rhetoric, which advocates for a free and independent Papua, has long been a hallmark of KNPB’s stance on the issue.
Military’s Firm Response
In response to this pro-independence event, Lieutenant Colonel Gatot Awan Febrianto, spokesperson for the Indonesian Army’s Regional Command (Kodam XIV/Hasanuddin) issued a formal statement emphasizing that the Indonesian military would not tolerate any activities or organizations that challenge Indonesia’s sovereignty.
He warned that actions promoting separatism and instability would be dealt with according to the law, and such activities could jeopardize public order and national security.
“We emphasize that if any activity or organization engages in actions that are proven to violate the law, it will certainly be prosecuted in accordance with the applicable legal provisions. Moreover, if such activities have the potential to disrupt security and stability, law enforcement will take the necessary steps to ensure order is maintained.” he said
Lieutenant Colonel Awan also clarified that while law enforcement would be led by the South Sulawesi Police (Polda Sulsel), the military would provide necessary support to ensure the protection of the nation’s unity. He urged the public and involved parties to refrain from participating in unlawful activities and to avoid being provoked into actions that threaten national stability.

The Indonesian military and police remain committed to safeguarding national unity and security. The Indonesian authorities have emphasized the importance of adhering to the rule of law and maintaining a peaceful approach.
“Both the military and police forces will continue monitoring and addressing any actions that could disrupt the country’s stability,” he added
