Bank Mandiri’s Role in Empowering Migrant Workers and Boosting Remittances
JAKARTA, RAKYAT NEWS – Bank Mandiri has emerged as a crucial financial partner for Indonesia’s migrant workers (PMI), handling a remarkable Rp2 trillion in incoming remittance transactions by the end of 2024. This represents a 60% year-on-year growth, signaling both the growing number of Indonesian migrant workers and the increased use of digital banking services such as Bank Mandiri’s Livin’ app.
The success highlights the trust placed in Bank Mandiri by the Indonesian diaspora and its role in supporting Indonesia’s economic growth through inclusive financial services. Evi Dempowati, SVP of Retail Deposit Product Sales at Bank Mandiri, attributed this significant growth to the increasing number of migrant workers abroad and the bank’s continuous innovation.
“Our mission has always been to be a key financial partner for the public, especially migrant workers both at home and abroad. This growth reflects our commitment to enhancing services to meet our customers’ needs,” Evi said in a statement on January 30.
To better serve the needs of PMIs, Bank Mandiri has provided easy access through its Livin’ by Mandiri app. The app allows users to open accounts online, transfer funds, make deposits, pay bills, manage foreign exchange, and even invest— all from the convenience of their smartphones.
The number of Livin’ app users abroad nearly doubled by the end of 2024, reaching 100,000 users, underscoring its popularity among PMIs as their primary tool for managing finances overseas.
In addition to digital solutions, Bank Mandiri also leverages its extensive network of international branches and remittance partners to support smooth transactions for PMIs. Subsidiaries like Mandiri International Remittance in Malaysia contribute more than 50% of the total remittance transactions.
The bank also partners with remittance agents in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Hong Kong, ensuring that PMIs worldwide can send money back to Indonesia easily and affordably.
Looking ahead, Bank Mandiri is committed to expanding partnerships with international remittance agents and integrating advanced technologies such as application programming interfaces (APIs).
This will help optimize transactions and improve service delivery. Through these efforts, Bank Mandiri aims to create an inclusive financial ecosystem that supports the empowerment of Indonesia’s global diaspora. Beyond facilitating financial transactions, Bank Mandiri is also focused on empowering PMIs through its Mandiri Sahabatku program.
This initiative offers financial literacy and entrepreneurship training designed to help migrant workers manage their finances effectively. The program guides PMIs before departure, during their time abroad, and upon their return, ensuring they can make the most of their earnings and contribute to the local economy as entrepreneurs.
The strategic focus on migrant worker empowerment aligns with the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises’ vision to build an inclusive and sustainable business ecosystem. By integrating innovative financial solutions and technology, Bank Mandiri is not only enhancing its remittance services but also playing an active role in supporting Indonesia’s economic transformation and empowering its diaspora.
Evi emphasized that Bank Mandiri’s efforts are in line with the broader goal of making banking services accessible to all Indonesians, particularly those working abroad. “We want to ensure every PMI has easy access to reliable banking services, enabling them to better manage their finances and contribute to Indonesia’s economy,” she concluded. Looking forward, Bank Mandiri remains focused on expanding financial access for migrant workers.
By enhancing its digital capabilities, strengthening international partnerships, and continuing its financial literacy initiatives, the bank is determined to help PMIs achieve greater financial independence and success, further supporting Indonesia’s economic growth on a global scale.
