Indonesia-France Collaboration to Boost Domestic Defense Industry with P2 Tiger APC
BANTEN, RAKYAT NEWS – The Ministry of Defense (Kemhan) of Indonesia has expressed strong support for a new collaboration between private Indonesian company PT SSE (Sentra Surya Ekajaya) and French company Texelis. This partnership aims to enhance the production of locally made defense equipment for the Indonesian National Army (TNI).
The collaboration has led to the development of the P2 Tiger 4×4 Armored Personnel Carrier (APC), a vehicle specially designed to meet the Indonesian Army’s demands.
Major General TNI Piek Budyakto, the Director General of Defense Potential at the Ministry of Defense, highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that contribute to the growth of Indonesia’s defense industry. He emphasized the importance of fostering international partnerships and developing local technology to strengthen the defense sector.
During the launch event of the P2 Tiger APC in Banten on January 23, 2025, Major General Piek reiterated that the Indonesian government is focused on increasing the local content of its defense industry.
“We are nurturing domestic products, particularly in the defense sector, and we aim to continuously enhance the local content in our defense equipment,” he stated.
His remarks align with the directives of the Minister of Defense, Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, who has emphasized that the TNI must use locally produced defense products.
At present, the local content in Indonesia’s defense equipment stands at around 40%, well below the target of 70%. However, with the implementation of the 2019 Omnibus Law on Job Creation, Major General Piek is confident that this target will be achieved. The law is expected to streamline the process of creating and promoting locally made defense technology.
The P2 Tiger APC, designed and produced by PT SSE in its Tangerang facility, is a product of this collaboration. This armored vehicle weighs 18 tons and is assembled entirely in Indonesia, with components integrated by Texelis, a French company known for its work on the French Army’s Serval 4×4 APC.
The P2 Tiger offers significant improvements over earlier models. It features a more powerful engine, increased passenger and cargo capacity, better maneuverability thanks to its new independent suspension system, and enhanced protection. Depending on the configuration, the vehicle’s protection level can range from STANAG 4569 level 2 to level 4.
The APC’s maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW) is 18 tons, with a base weight of 14 tons. The P2 Tiger is designed to meet the high demands of the Indonesian military, offering a reliable and well-protected platform for transporting personnel in various operational scenarios.
This partnership between Indonesia and France marks an important step in advancing the local defense industry and enhancing the capabilities of the Indonesian military. The Indonesian Ministry of Defense continues to prioritize the development of self-reliant defense technology, ensuring that the country’s armed forces are equipped with cutting-edge, locally manufactured systems.
The government also sees the P2 Tiger project as a model for future collaborations, combining international expertise with local innovation to create robust and dependable defense solutions. This initiative not only supports Indonesia’s defense needs but also strengthens its position as a growing player in the global defense industry. (Uki Ruknuddin)
