Former Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi Joins Vale Indonesia’s Board of Commissioners
JAKARTA, RAKYAT NEWS– The giant mining PT Vale Indonesia Tbk (INCO) has announced the appointment of Retno Marsudi, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, as an Independent Commissioner. This decision was confirmed during the Extraordinary General Meeting of Shareholders (EGMS) held today, Tuesday, January 14. Retno’s appointment marks a significant shift in the company’s leadership, bringing in a seasoned diplomat with extensive experience in global affairs.
Retno replaces Raden Sukyar, who previously held the position of Independent Commissioner. With this change, PT Vale Indonesia’s Board of Commissioners now includes several key figures, with Muhammad Rachmat Kaimuddin continuing his role as President Commissioner and Emily Marie Olson serving as Vice President Commissioner. Other independent commissioners joining the team include Rudiantara and Marita Alisjahbana, further strengthening the company’s governance.
Retno Marsudi’s appointment is expected to bring a wealth of expertise to Vale Indonesia, particularly in strategic areas related to global health challenges. As Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2014 until October 2024, Retno has developed a deep understanding of international cooperation and diplomacy. Her leadership in managing Indonesia’s response to global issues, including the COVID-19 pandemic, will provide valuable perspectives for Vale as it navigates the complexities of international markets.
During her tenure as Foreign Minister, Retno played a pivotal role in securing access to vaccines during the pandemic and enhancing Indonesia’s global standing. Her experience in fostering collaboration across borders is seen as crucial for Vale, particularly as the company continues to grow and strengthen its partnerships in the mining sector. Retno’s appointment reflects Vale’s commitment to diversity and strategic foresight in its leadership.
In addition to her role at Vale, Retno Marsudi has been appointed as an Independent Commissioner at PT Bundamedik Tbk (BMHS), a leading healthcare company in Indonesia. Her role at BMHS focuses on advancing healthcare services, with a special emphasis on family health and well-being. This dual role showcases her broad expertise in both global affairs and public health, positioning her as a key figure in driving corporate governance and sustainability.
At PT Vale, Retno’s experience is expected to complement the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance its corporate governance and sustainability practices. Vale, a major player in the global nickel industry, faces increasing scrutiny from investors, governments, and environmental groups. With Retno on board, Vale aims to bolster its commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles.
The posisition of Retno to the Board of Commissioners is part of Vale’s broader strategy to ensure that its leadership is equipped with the necessary skills to navigate the challenges of a rapidly changing global economy. Her appointment is seen as a positive step towards aligning the company’s governance with international best practices, particularly in the areas of sustainability and corporate responsibility.
Retno’s appointment as Independent Commissioner at PT Vale Indonesia represents a strategic move by the company to enhance its governance and global outlook. Her extensive diplomatic background and leadership in international health issues will provide valuable insights as Vale continues to strengthen its position in the mining industry and global markets.
