JAKARTA, RAKYAT NEWS – Brazil announced that Indonesia has officially joined BRICS as a full member, marking a significant milestone for the Southeast Asian nation. This expansion is the first under Brazil’s presidency, which began on January 1.

Indonesia’s membership was initially approved during the Johannesburg Summit in August 2023 but was formalized only after the recent presidential elections.

Indonesia is recognized as the largest economy in Southeast Asia, and its inclusion in BRICS aligns with the group’s objectives of reforming global governance and enhancing cooperation among emerging economies.

The Brazilian government welcomed Indonesia, emphasizing its commitment to deepening South-South cooperation.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed that this membership is a strategic move to enhance partnerships with other developing nations, focusing on mutual respect and sustainable development.

The ministry also acknowledged the support from Russia, the chair of BRICS for 2024, in facilitating Indonesia’s entry.
Indonesia’s accession to BRICS is seen as a counterbalance to Western influence and an opportunity to strengthen trade ties with countries in the Global South.

Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir highlighted that joining BRICS will expand trade cooperation and open new opportunities for Indonesia.

The new Indonesian government, led by President Prabowo Subianto, decided to pursue full membership after evaluating the implications of joining BRICS. This decision reflects Indonesia’s goal of enhancing its role in global economic discussions and fostering greater collaboration with other emerging economies.

As a member of BRICS, Indonesia joins major economies such as Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The bloc has recently expanded to include countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran, indicating a growing influence among developing nations.
