JAKARTA, RAKYAT NEWS – Experts suggest the Indonesian government should create a comprehensive masterplan to promote rendang as an intangible cultural heritage if it is officially recognized by UNESCO. Sari Lenggogeni, a tourism expert from Universitas Andalas, highlighted the importance of a coordinated promotional strategy to ensure rendang’s global recognition.

Lenggogeni, who is also the head of the West Sumatra Regional Tourism Promotion Agency, emphasized that food enthusiasts, or “foodies,” constitute 50% of international tourists. In her research, nearly 2,000 domestic and international tourists identified local cuisine as one of the top three attractions when visiting a country.

She suggested that West Sumatra, as the birthplace of rendang, should be positioned as the heart of “slow food tourism.” This would include establishing villages and cities as “rendang destinations” that celebrate the dish’s authenticity, similar to how other countries promote their own signature foods like pizza in Italy or tea in China.

The push for rendang’s global recognition has gained momentum following its inclusion in CNN’s “Top 50 Delicious Foods.” This accolade underscores rendang’s growing international appeal and recognition as a rich and flavorful dish with deep local cultural significance.

According to Lenggogeni, the creation of a masterplan is even more crucial now that rendang is being increasingly recognized worldwide. She also noted that rendang carries stories of local wisdom, resilience, and history, such as its role as a food supply during World War II, making it a powerful cultural symbol.

With the potential UNESCO recognition, there is an urgent need to secure the authenticity of rendang’s cultural legacy. Lenggogeni warned that without proper documentation and protection, other countries might falsely claim rendang as their own.
