JAKARTA, RAKYAT NEWS – Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs, retired Police General Budi Gunawan, has highlighted the resurgence of global terrorism activities. Speaking at the launch of the I-KHUB BNPT CT/VE Outlook 2024 and Komstra PE Roadmap in Jakarta on Tuesday, he warned of rising radicalization, particularly among the younger generation.

“This trend is evident through the radicalization of youth influenced by narratives surrounding genocide, the Israel-Gaza conflict, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Iran-backed proxy groups in Syria,” said Budi. He urged collective vigilance and proactive measures to prevent these developments from inspiring domestic terrorist cells in Indonesia.

Based on monitoring by his ministry, various jihadist factions in Syria are intensifying their attacks, particularly in Aleppo, with conflicts expanding into Hama Province. These offensives are creating a volatile security situation, further complicating peace efforts in the region.

Budi expressed deep concern over the humanitarian crisis in Syria, especially the plight of Indonesian nationals still detained or stranded there. These individuals, including women and children, remain in precarious conditions, notably in Al-Hol refugee camp.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has also called for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Syria. In a statement delivered by his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, Guterres urged all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law and return to the political process outlined in UN Security Council Resolution 2254 (2015).

The appeal followed a recent escalation in violence, with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and allied opposition groups launching significant attacks in northwestern Syria. These actions disrupted frontlines that had remained static since 2020, further destabilizing the region.
