Indonesia Grants Chandra Asri’s Ciwandan Plant OVNI Status, Enhancing National Industrial Independence
JAKARTA, RAKYAT NEWS – The PT Chandra Asri Pacific Tbk (Chandra Asri Group) has been granted the status of a National Vital Object (OVNI) in the industrial sector for its petrochemical plant in Ciwandan, Cilegon, Banten.
The Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia officially awarded this status through Ministerial Decree No. 3023 of 2024. This designation reflects the strategic role of the company in supporting the country’s industrial resilience and self-sufficiency.
The Ciwandan plant, which spans 115.35 hectares, houses state-of-the-art petrochemical facilities, utility assets, and office buildings. It is a key contributor to Indonesia’s domestic petrochemical production and helps reduce dependence on imports, according to Suryandi, Director of HR & Corporate Affairs at Chandra Asri Group.
“This recognition highlights our commitment to meeting domestic demand for petrochemical products and supporting the government and local industries,” said Suryandi.
Chandra Asri has held the OVNI status since 2012, when it was first awarded under Ministerial Decree No. 620/M-IND/Kep/12/2012. The company has worked diligently to operate with high standards of safety, sustainability, and transparency, ensuring that its operations benefit the broader industrial and national economy.
The Ciwandan facility is Indonesia’s first and only Naphta Cracker plant, producing vital petrochemical products such as Olefins (Ethylene and Propylene), Polyolefins (Polyethylene and Polypropylene), Pygas, and Mixed-C4. The plant is also the sole domestic producer of Butadiene, MTBE, and Butene, all essential for various industries.
For over 32 years, Chandra Asri Group has played a central role in Indonesia’s industrial landscape, supplying critical raw materials to sectors such as manufacturing, automotive, electronics, and infrastructure. The company’s strategic location and its extensive range of products have made it a cornerstone of the national and international supply chain.
With the designation of OVNI, Chandra Asri Group acknowledges its responsibility for safe, accountable, and transparent operations. “We are committed to continuing operations that are responsible, transparent, and have a positive long-term impact on the national economy,” Suryandi emphasized.
In addition to its role in industrial production, Chandra Asri contributes significantly to the national economy through tax revenue, which supports the country’s fiscal needs. The company also plays an active role in local workforce development, supporting educational institutions and enhancing the skills of the Indonesian workforce to improve their competitiveness.
The OVNI designation will remain in effect until 2029, subject to periodic evaluations to ensure compliance with regulations and sustainable management practices. This status affirms Chandra Asri’s ongoing importance to Indonesia’s industrial and economic sectors, reinforcing its position as a vital player in the nation’s growth.
Chandra Asri’s recognition as a National Vital Object is part of Indonesia’s broader efforts to strengthen its domestic industries and reduce reliance on foreign imports. By investing in high-tech facilities and promoting local manufacturing capabilities, the company helps ensure that critical petrochemical products remain available and affordable for Indonesian industries.
This milestone also underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding strategic industries and ensuring their continued growth. As Indonesia aims for greater industrial independence, companies like Chandra Asri play a pivotal role in achieving national economic goals.
Chandra Asri Group’s experience and leadership in petrochemical production reflect its dedication to supporting both local industries and national economic resilience. The company’s strategic initiatives and partnerships are a testament to its commitment to driving sustainable economic growth in Indonesia.
As it looks forward to the next five years, Chandra Asri remains focused on its core mission of providing high-quality, locally-produced petrochemical products that drive economic development while maintaining high standards of safety, sustainability, and operational efficiency.(Uki Ruknuddin)
