JAKARTA, RAKYAT NEWS — Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin emphasized that global powers must respect the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). Speaking at a working meeting with the Indonesian House of Representatives’ Commission I, alongside the Indonesian Military (TNI) Commander and other senior TNI leaders, Sjafrie reiterated the importance of upholding the country’s territorial integrity in the face of rising global tensions.

“We respect global powers, but it is equally important that they respect the independence and sovereignty of Indonesia,” said Sjafrie during the meeting at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday. His comments come as Indonesia navigates complex geopolitical dynamics involving major global players.

Sjafrie acknowledged Indonesia’s role in easing global tensions, particularly with the ongoing fluctuations in relations between the United States and China. He emphasized that Indonesia, positioned as a non-aligned nation, is committed to maintaining peace and promoting dialogue between conflicting parties on the global stage.

“The tensions in global relations, especially between the United States and China, place Indonesia in a crucial position to play a role in de-escalating conflicts,” Sjafrie remarked. “Indonesia’s non-bloc stance prioritizes peace and advocates for the cessation of hostilities between nations.”

Despite this commitment to global peace, Sjafrie made it clear that the nation’s love for peace must always be balanced with a strong commitment to defending its independence. “We are a nation that cherishes peace, but we must also prioritize our independence, as emphasized by our founding fathers,” he added.

In addition to discussing global issues, the Defense Minister also addressed domestic concerns. He assured that the government is closely monitoring and preparing for potential threats to Indonesia’s sovereignty, including insurgencies, particularly in Papua. “We are anticipating any challenges that may disrupt national security and the strategic goals for Indonesia’s economic development,” he stated.
