US Backs Indonesia’s Efforts to Accelerate OECD Membership Process
JAKARTA, RAKYAT NEWS – U.S. President Joe Biden has expressed his strong support for Indonesia’s efforts to expedite its accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). This commitment was formalized in a joint statement issued by the White House after a meeting between President Biden and Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto on November 12, 2024, at the White House in Washington, D.C.
In the statement, the White House emphasized the importance of the OECD as a platform that offers a pathway for faster and higher-quality economic growth. The organization, it noted, promotes stronger and more responsible policies that can help countries achieve sustainable development.
The U.S. government’s support comes at a crucial moment in Indonesia’s efforts to align its economic practices with OECD standards. The statement added that the United States looks forward to working closely with Indonesia to ensure the successful integration of OECD norms, including in areas such as governance, economic policy, labor practices, and trade.
Both leaders highlighted the importance of these reforms, stressing that OECD membership would help Indonesia enhance its global competitiveness and attract more investment by adhering to internationally recognized best practices. As part of the process, the U.S. has pledged to offer technical assistance and support to ensure that Indonesia successfully implements the necessary reforms.
President Biden also reiterated the U.S. commitment to upholding a rule-based international trade system. Both leaders agreed on the critical role of multilateral institutions, such as the OECD, in promoting free, fair, and transparent trade. They also recognized the need for stronger international cooperation to address global economic challenges.
Another key point of discussion was the importance of mineral supply chains, with both leaders acknowledging their role in strengthening the manufacturing sector and fueling economic growth in both the U.S. and Indonesia. They discussed the potential for further collaboration in developing these supply chains, which are seen as essential for economic resilience and sustainability.
As part of their ongoing efforts, President Biden and President Prabowo reaffirmed their commitment to facilitating the global transition to clean energy. They underscored that enhancing the mineral supply chain, especially for critical minerals, would support this transition while contributing to long-term economic growth in both nations.
The two leaders also emphasized the importance of promoting sustainability in mineral extraction and supply chain practices, stressing the need to adhere to environmental and labor standards. By aligning their approaches, both countries aim to develop a framework that benefits their economies while also supporting sustainable development goals.
President Prabowo and President Biden pledged to accelerate ongoing discussions related to key minerals, which are vital for technological advancements and energy solutions. The cooperation between Indonesia and the U.S. on these issues is seen as critical for both countries’ future economic strategies and their commitment to a greener global economy. (Uki Ruknuddin)
