JAKARTA, RAKYAT NEWS – The Russian Ambassador to Indonesia, S.G. Tolchenov, attended a solemn ceremony to lay flowers at the grave of Subandrio, a notable Indonesian diplomat and former Foreign Minister. The event, organized by the Russian-Indonesian Friendship Society (Koper Rusindo), commemorated the 110th anniversary of Subandrio’s birth and celebrated his role in strengthening ties between Indonesia and Russia, September 21, 2024

The ceremony took place at a memorial site in Jakarta, where representatives from both countries gathered to honor Subandrio’s contributions. Ambassador Tolchenov highlighted the enduring legacy of Subandrio, who was pivotal in establishing diplomatic relations between Indonesia and the Soviet Union.

Subandrio served as Indonesia’s first Ambassador to the USSR from 1954 to 1956, during which he laid the groundwork for bilateral cooperation. His tenure as Foreign Minister from 1957 to 1966 marked a crucial period in Indonesia’s foreign policy, as the country aligned itself with other non-aligned nations and fostered closer ties with the Soviet Union.

A close associate of Indonesia’s first President, Sukarno, Subandrio was instrumental in promoting Indonesia’s independence on the global stage. His efforts strengthened the country’s international standing and forged a path of mutual respect and cooperation between Indonesia and Russia, a legacy that continues to be celebrated today.

The Russian-Indonesian Friendship Society, which organized the ceremony, seeks to enhance cultural and historical bonds between the two nations. The organization emphasized Subandrio’s role in fostering a unique and lasting friendship that has endured political shifts and changing times.

Ambassador Tolchenov underscored the significance of Subandrio’s legacy in his remarks, noting that the diplomat’s name is “forever inscribed in the history of Russian-Indonesian relations.” Tolchenov added that the two countries continue to build on the foundation laid by Subandrio, expanding cooperation in various fields.
