BALI, RAKYAT NEWS – Her Highness Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir, the U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia, emphasized the importance of U.S. tourists adhering to local laws during their visit to Bali to prevent immigration violations.

During the Education USA exhibition in Nusa Dua on October 16, 2024, Ambassador Lakhdhir stated, “American tourists must comply with local regulations, just as they are expected to do worldwide.”

According to the Bali Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, 19 American citizens were deported for immigration violations from January to August 2024. Despite this, the number of U.S. tourists visiting Bali increased to 178,000 during the same period, a nearly six percent rise from 168,000 in 2023.

Ambassador Lakhdhir acknowledged that while 19 deportations may seem minor compared to the overall number of visitors, her message remains clear: adherence to local laws is crucial for their safety.

“This figure does not represent the entirety of American tourists; however, we consistently urge compliance for their own security,” she stated.

Data from the Bali Immigration Office indicated a significant rise in deportations, with 412 foreign nationals deported from January to September 2024, compared to 335 in the previous year. Deportations involved nationals from various countries, including Russia, China, the Philippines, Australia, Nigeria, and Ukraine, often due to overstaying visas or other legal infractions.

Ambassador Lakhdhir’s message reinforces ongoing efforts to promote lawful behavior among tourists, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors to Indonesia. (Uki Ruknuddin)
