Indonesia Reaffirms Commitment to Peacekeeping Amid Rising Tensions in Lebanon
JAKARTA, RAKYAT NEWS – Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi stated that Indonesia will not be intimidated by the recent Israeli attacks on United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) personnel and property.
This remark was made during the 45th ASEAN Summit in Vientiane, Laos, in response to Israel’s assault on a UNIFIL base in Naqoura on October 10.
“The attack is an act of terror by Israel against peacekeeping forces and the international community. Indonesia asserts that those committed to peace will never be intimidated,” Retno emphasized.
As the fifth-largest contributor of peacekeeping forces globally and the largest to UNIFIL, Indonesia is committed to supporting UN peace missions in line with the 1945 Constitution.
Retno urged the UN Security Council to ensure the enforcement of its mandate and take concrete actions.
During her address, Retno noted that the UN Security Council held a briefing on the current situation in the Middle East, prompted by France, focusing on the developments in Lebanon and UNIFIL.
She highlighted the importance of this meeting in responding to the escalating conflict, particularly regarding Israeli attacks on peacekeeping forces in the “Blue Line” neutral zone.
Indonesia was invited to present its views at this meeting as a country concerned with humanitarian issues amid the ongoing conflict.
Retno condemned the Israeli attacks, calling them a violation of the UN Charter, multilateral principles, and international humanitarian law.
She stressed the need for collective action from the international community to maintain stability and security in the region and to uphold human rights. (Uki Ruknuddin)
