JAKARTA, RAKYAT NEWS – As tensions escalate in Lebanon with ongoing Israeli military strikes, Indonesian National Forces (TNI) pay its attentions. Major General Hariyanto, head of the Indonesian National Armed Forces’ Information Center (Kapuspen TNI), has confirmed that no Indonesian soldiers are among the casualties.

In a press briefing while attending a rehearsal for Indonesia’s 79th Armed Forces Day at the National Monument in Jakarta, he addressed concerns regarding the safety of TNI personnel deployed as part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

“As of now, they are safe,” he stated in response to questions from journalists.

General Hariyanto emphasized that Indonesian troops in Lebanon continue to fulfill their peacekeeping responsibilities effectively, despite the challenging circumstances.

“Our personnel are prepared to assist the government in evacuating Indonesian citizens if needed,” he added.

However, he clarified that any evacuation operations would require prior approval from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UNIFIL Force Commander.

“This process must be conducted in stages, but rest assured that their mission continues as usual,” he noted.

Currently, over 1,000 TNI soldiers are deployed across various regions in Lebanon as part of their peacekeeping mission with UNIFIL.

They serve in several capacities, including the Maritime Task Force (MTF), the Mechanized Battalion Task Force (INDOBATT), and various support and medical units.

While most TNI troops are stationed on land, the Maritime Task Force is actively engaged in naval operations. This strategic deployment underscores Indonesia’s commitment to international peacekeeping efforts.

The situation in Lebanon has intensified in recent weeks, with Israel launching a series of military operations since the end of September. These have escalated into ground invasions and air strikes, notably targeting areas in and around Beirut.

Israeli Defense Forces claim their operations are aimed at Hezbollah, yet Lebanese authorities report significant civilian casualties, with hundreds killed and thousands injured. Moreover, tens of thousands of residents have been forced to flee their homes due to the violence.

In the midst of this turmoil, the Russian government has evacuated 60 of its citizens from Lebanon. The Indonesian government, as of August 2024, has also facilitated the return of over 20 Indonesian nationals.

According to the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, approximately 155 Indonesian citizens remain in Lebanon amidst the conflict. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and remain prepared to assist those who wish to return.

General Hariyanto reiterated that TNI personnel in Lebanon are in good health and continue to execute their duties amidst the ongoing conflict. This assurance comes as the Indonesian government calls for restraint from all parties involved in the Middle Eastern crisis.

In parallel, the World Health Organization has reported that hospitals in Lebanon are overwhelmed due to a surge in patients from the ongoing violence. This situation adds pressure to an already strained healthcare system.

As developments unfold, it is crucial for international stakeholders to engage in dialogue to mitigate the humanitarian impact of the ongoing conflict in Lebanon.
