USA, RAKYAT NEWS – In a significant address during the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi emphasized the urgent need for international collaboration to tackle the existential threat posed by rising sea levels.

She highlighted that the impacts of this phenomenon extend beyond coastal nations, affecting inland communities as well. “Rising sea levels represent a global crisis that demands immediate action,” she stated in a written statement.

Three key points were emphasized in her remarks. First, she called for ambitious climate action, stressing the necessity for more robust initiatives to combat global warming.

“The 1.5 degrees Celsius target is non-negotiable,” she insisted, advocating for a fair burden-sharing approach rather than merely shifting responsibilities.

He underscored the importance of strengthened international cooperation in addressing rising sea levels. She focused on enhancing capacity building, providing technical assistance, and mobilizing resources collectively, including financing and technology access for all nations.

She urged for a stronger global political will to combat the impacts of rising sea levels, which include loss of territory and disruption of livelihoods. Marsudi proposed establishing a dedicated global agenda on sea level rise and enhancing international legal frameworks to protect national sovereignty and populations.

The High-Level Meeting on Sea Level Rise was attended by representatives from 128 countries. The discussions centered around collective efforts to tackle the crisis, including climate financing, territorial sovereignty, and making data-driven decisions.

In line with these discussions, Indonesia has taken concrete steps by hosting the inaugural meeting of the Archipelagic and Island States Forum in Bali last October. This initiative aims to boost international collaboration and explore innovative financing mechanisms for island nations.
