British Nationals Expelled from Indonesia for Violating Demonstration Restrictions
JAKARTA, RAKYAT NEWS— The Central Jakarta Immigration Office has deported two British nationals, identified as BJL and BTS, following their involvement in a demonstration in Jakarta. The two were participating in a rally related to ride-hailing services on August 29, 2024, near the Horse Statue at Monas, Central Jakarta.
Director General of Immigration, Silmy Karim, stated that the demonstration took place in an area restricted for foreigners. “Foreign nationals are prohibited from participating in such activities,” Karim explained in a press release.
The two British individuals were observed speaking at the demonstration. Ronald Arman Abdullah, Head of the Central Jakarta Immigration Office, instructed his team to detain and investigate them. The investigation revealed that BJL and BTS were in Indonesia on tourist visas, not for engaging in political activities.
“This is a clear violation of immigration regulations,” Karim affirmed. The foreigners were found to be in breach of Article 75 of Law No. 6 of 2011 on Immigration. Consequently, they were deported and barred from re-entering the country.
The deportation process occurred after BJL and BTS were held for six days. They were sent back to the UK on September 4, 2024, at their own expense. Karim commended the Central Jakarta Immigration Office for its swift action in addressing potential security threats posed by foreign individuals.
He also urged all foreign nationals in Indonesia to adhere to local laws and respect cultural norms to ensure a harmonious environment. “To prevent future violations and uphold Indonesia’s dignity, immigration officers nationwide are monitoring and acting against any breaches of regulations,” Karim added.
