MEDAN,RAKYAT NEWS- The Citilink, a subsidiary of Garuda Indonesia, has inaugurated a new direct flight route between Kualanamu International Airport in Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The inaugural flight was marked by a traditional water salute ceremony at Kualanamu International Airport on July 28, 2024. The new route aims to cater to the increasing demand for umrah trips, particularly from North Sumatra.

“We are pleased to welcome Citilink’s new direct route, which addresses the growing needs of umrah pilgrims from North Sumatra,” said Kedar Deshpande, Director of Commercial and Business Development at PT Angkasa Pura Aviasi.

The first flight utilized a Boeing A330-900 NEO, carrying 358 passengers from Jeddah to Kualanamu and 360 passengers for the return flight. Citilink’s new service also features international-to-domestic transit routes, streamlining the journey for umrah pilgrims continuing their travels within Indonesia.

In 2023, the number of umrah pilgrims from North Sumatra rose by approximately 36.54% from the previous year, with 38,224 pilgrims traveling to Saudi Arabia. The new route is expected to ease the travel process and reduce wait times for pilgrims in North Sumatra.

Sokhib Al Rokhman, Head of the Medan Airport Authority, expressed his support for the new route, noting that it helps address the high demand for umrah flights in the region. At least four travel agencies have already used Citilink’s service, with more expected until October 26, 2024.

The expansion of direct flights underscores Citilink’s commitment to improving travel options for umrah pilgrims and enhancing connectivity between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. (Uki Ruknuddin)
