JAKARTA, RAKYAT NEWS – Defense Minister and President-elect Prabowo Subianto met with the Australian Governor General David Hurley to discuss strengthening the relations between Indonesia and Australia.

The meeting took place at the residence of the Australian Ambassador to Indonesia on Friday, May 17, 2024.

Prabowo expressed his gratitude for the invitation, emphasizing the significance of the meeting in enhancing bilateral ties. “I am very grateful to His Excellency David Hurley for the invitation. This is a very special opportunity to strengthen our relationship,” Prabowo remarked.

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the cadet exchange program between the Indonesian Military Academy (AKMIL) and the Royal Military College (RMC) Duntroon. This program has significantly contributed to developing military leaders with a profound understanding of each country’s culture and strategic environment.

Both Prabowo and General Hurley are alumni of the cadet exchange program, having participated in 1974. They reminisced about their cadet days and acknowledged the program’s importance in establishing robust military relations between the two nations. “This cadet exchange program has produced a generation of military leaders who not only have high professional skills but also a deep understanding of each country’s culture and strategic environment. Governor General Hurley and I both felt great benefits from this program,” he said.

Looking ahead, he expressed his optimism for even closer ties between Indonesia and Australia. “I hope that relations between Indonesia and Australia will continue to be strengthened through increasingly close defense cooperation, with the same collaborative spirit. Together, we can face global and regional security challenges more effectively,” he stated. (Ruknuddin)
